Earlier this month, Microsoft revealed some new features that have been, or will be added to its free Outlook Web App. Today, as part of its announcements at the latest Microsoft Exchange Conference in Austin, Texas, the company revealed even more Outlook Web App features that will be added in the coming months in Office 365.
In a new blog post, Microsoft said one of the new features has the code name “Clutter”. As it suggests, it will attempt to learn which emails are important to a user, based on their patterns of reading and replying to those messages. In the screenshot above, the “clutter” feature has been turned on, and as a result the inbox of this user now has been reduced to just the important emails. Any messages deemed unimportant have been moved to the “clutter” footer at the bottom.
The footer can be expanded so that the user can quickly skim over those messages to see if any might need attention. If they don’t, all of them can be deleted at once.
The second upcoming feature in Outlook Web Apps are related to improved document collaboration. Email attachments can now be offered as a link to a file stored in OneDrive for Business. Also, any Word, Excel or PowerPoint file sent via email can be opened via the free Office Online app. The document can be edited and then sent back in an email reply.
The blog also goes over some of the new Groups features from its Yammer division that will be put into Office 365 for business users. Some of those features were previously revealed at the recent SharePoint Conference.
Finally, Microsoft announced that a Office Web App port for Android smartphones is in the works, which will join the previously released apps for iPhone and iPad. No release date for the Android version was announced.
